Best Latina Authors to Read in 2022

This year, 2022 is packed with many exciting things; books, to begin with. Here are the top must-read books on this season:

The first one, is from Mexican-Canadian author Silvia Moreno-Garcia who wrote a  New York Times bestseller, Mexican Gothic,  and her latest gem is Velvet Was the Night, a noir novel set in 1970s Mexico City that follows a secretary, her neighbor (who mysteriously disappears), and the man, employed by a “shadowy figure” who is also trying to find her.

The second one, is from my all time favorite author, Julissa Arce who has her new book You Sound Like A White Girl coming out in March, just in time for her birthday!~ As a brown immigrant from Mexico, assimilation had been demanded of her since the moment she set foot in San Antonio, Texas, in 1994 and when she was able to get rid off her accent, ‘sounding like a white girl‘ was music to her ears. A lot has changed from that moment and this book is a celebration of your roots, your history and uniqueness. You don’t need to sound like anyone else but you!

Another great book to look out is from Dominican-American author Naima Coster, What’s Mine and Yours, which became an instant New York Times bestseller. The story revolves around students Gee (Black) and Nicole (half Latina, half-white), whose worlds (and families) come together when their community in the Piedmont of North Carolina begins to integrate the majority-Black and majority-white high schools.

Another book you should check up, if you haven’t already, is the Latinx anthology Wild Tongues Can’t Be Tamed (neither we can, people, neither we can!) edited by a Black, Indigenous, and Honduran woman, Saraciea J. Fennell, is a compilation of stories by 15 Latin writers including Ingrid Rojas Contreras, Natasha Diaz, and Elizabeth Acevedo, who portrayed the anthology highlights the Latinx diaspora which, in the U.S., includes people from 33 countries.

Lastly, let’s talk about Jefa in Training. Endorsed by actress and entrepreneur, Eva Longoria, Cafe con Libros owner, Kalima DeSuze, angel investor, Beatriz Acevedo, and Daytime Emmy award-winner, Gaby Natale, Jefas In Training will foster the next generation of Latina owned businesses through lessons, anecdotes, worksheets, templates, and quotes. The book also features Latina founders including:

Latina entrepreneurs make up one of the fastest-growing entrepreneurial segments in the U.S. but are given very few resources to succeed.

The author, Ashley K. Stoyanov Ojeda is a community-builder, business development strategist, coach, and socialpreneur. Originally from Queens, NYC and born to a Mexican mom and French-American father, Ashley’s career started in the music industry in 2012, working at major record labels, publishers, and venues. After relocating to Portland, OR post-college, she created her own network for local womxn songwriters, now a national organization that has been featured in The Recording Academy, called #WomxnCrush Music.

Which ones are you reading this year?
