Ashlee Marie Preston: “This is one of the most historic Women’s History Month”

“This Women’s History Month is about our global definition of autonomy.” That’s how Media Personality Ashlee Marie Preston views this Women’s History Month. “I think if we frame the message in that way, this is probably going to be one of the most beautiful moments –bigger than even the Women’s March when it first happened.”
On LATV Queer’s exclusive interview with Preston, our host Enrique Sapene spoke on the opportunities to mitigate harm that’s still coming behind the trans/femme community from other communities. “I’ve had convos with other trans people, and some of the trans guys have been like, some are like ‘we understand why trans women face more violence because it’s more complex and it has to do with feeling more attractive, but that doesn’t mean that violence isn’t happening to trans masculine folks’. To be honest, this is a violent moment for trans-masculine and non binary people, especially in reproductive justice, because they’re being completely erased from the conversation altogether,” she says.

“I think this moment right now is not just about the women and femmes who’ve made history in our past but look at all the amazing women and femmes who are making history in the moment. Even to be among them, to have made my own contribution – I don’t know that we’ve had that kind of a moment in a long time, where history is being made in real time, and we’re getting to witness it and celebrate it. So, I think this Women’s History Month hits a lot different than the others before, because women and femmes are in the trenches in a powerful way. There’s a dignity and this fierceness. There is a power. When you think about power – especially in relationship to many of these systems, institutions, and structures – power has always been reserved for men, and very specific men: typically, cis, hetero, wealthy white men. To the see the way that women and girls and femmes altogether are showing up.” – Ashlee Marie Preston
