Champions: Argentina beats France and wins the World Cup

Argentina has won the World Cup after 36 years. Lionel Messi led his team to raise the biggest trophy in soccer. Before retiring, he was consecrated as the greatest of all time.

Argentina started winning the final match in Qatar against France, the reigning champion. With a penalty goal from Messi himself and a second one from Ángel Di María, the South-American team managed to stay in the win until minute 80. However, everything changed when Kylian Mbappé scored a penalty and a goal within two minutes.

With the extended time, Messi didn’t give up and scored yet again. But France wouldn’t let it go just like that. With another penalty, Mbappé tied 3-3 and became the Top Scorer of the World Cup. It was all down to penalties.

And then came Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez. When all that was left was hope, the goalkeeper arrived after failing to catch two shots from Kylian. He stopped a goal, and France missed another one, while Argentina scored all of them. Argentina has won the World Cup.

With 21 years, Enzo Fernández became the Best Young Player, and “Dibu” got the Best Goal-Keeper Award. As expected, Lionel Messi was named Best Player of the World Cup.

Argentina started the World Cup on the wrong foot. Being the head of Group C, they lost 1-2 against Saudi Arabia in their first match. However, they didn’t allow that step back to stop their fight to reach the final. Match after match, they started taking them down. Mexico (2-0), Poland (2-0), Australia (2-1), Netherlands (2(3)-2(4)) and finally Croatia (3-0), who came in third place.

Even in the Qualifiers, Argentina came in second place right after Brazil, who couldn’t beat Croatia and was left out of the World Cup in the quarter finals. The team led by Messi was one of the favorites, along with previous champion and now runner-up France, as well as Brazil. They arrived at the global event with 36 unbeaten games, having won the Copa América after 28 years not being able to do so.

However, Argentina’s soccer team has been a global sensation since its beginnings. They have won two World Cups, in 1978 and 1986, having reached the final on three more occasions. The last case was in 2014, when Argentina lost the last game against Germany, destroying every citizen’s hope. After getting eliminated in the round of 16 in 2018, they finally got their revenge, and were able to raise the trophy after 36 years.

Moreover, Argentina has had two of the best soccer players in history. Diego Maradona, who sadly passed away two years ago, led his team to win the World Cup in 1986. He was and still is considered a legend all around the world, but especially in Argentina, where he is even looked up to as a god. On the other hand, the current captain and also carrier of the number “10” shirt, is Lionel Messi. He has just finished playing his last World Cup, his fifth one, becoming the top Argentinian scorer ever in this type of event. He is also the third top scorer in history, having played 1003 matches, and has won the most Ballon D’Or: seven in total.

His love for his team mates has taken Argentina to reach the goal that every citizen has been waiting for decades. Not only do they play together, they are friends, and this has been shown for the past years on social media. Their chemistry has made everyone fall in love with them and this was an advantage they were able to take. Every street in Argentina was filled with happy fans, waving their light blue and white flags, showing their passion is unmatchable. Finally, Argentina is the world champion again.
