Amirah Vann on Embracing Strength and Representation in Fox’s “Doc”

Amirah Vann, the talented Afro-Latina actress, who many fans came to love on the hit tv show How To Get Away With Murder is once again showcasing her talents on the small screen with her powerful role in the new Fox TV series Doc.

Starring as Dr. Gina Walker, Vann brings to life a character that embodies strength, resilience, and heart. For Vann, this role is more than just another project, it’s a reflection of the progress made in the industry and the importance of authentic representation.

Dr. Gina Walker is a character Vann is proud to portray, especially as a mother of two herself. She is drawn to roles that showcase strong, empowered women, and Doc delivers exactly that. “It’s just the reality of the actual representation of what is there,” Vann says, emphasizing how far the entertainment industry has come in portraying Latinos in positions of power. “It’s really wonderful to amplify the people, especially the diversity of women.”

Beyond the strength of her character, Doc explores themes of resilience and second chances, something that immediately stood out to Vann when she first read the script. “If people can walk away and say, ‘Yes, your pain is real, it’s justified. And yes, your anger is real, it’s justified. But you can come out on the other side where freedom exists, and you can choose that for yourself, that’s what truly matters,” she said.  The show not only delivers engaging drama but also offers meaningful lessons on healing and redemption.

Another aspect of Doc that excites Vann is its diverse and dynamic cast. “It reflects real life,” she says, acknowledging how grateful she is to be part of a show that prioritizes inclusivity. The bond among the cast members is so strong that they even have a group chat to celebrate each other’s performances. It’s this camaraderie and passion for the craft that makes the experience even more fulfilling for Vann.

For Vann, Doc also serves as a platform to embrace her Afro-Latina heritage unapologetically. She recalls a time when she felt pressure to “put something on” to appear more Latina, but she has since realized that her authenticity is enough. “I don’t have to change anything about myself,” she affirms. “My Afro-Latinidad is represented within me every day.” She appreciates that her character speaks Spanish in the show, showing the audience the authenticity of real-life hospital settings where people come in at their most vulnerable moments.

Ultimately, Vann believes that Doc magnifies the world in all the right ways. The show doesn’t just tell a story of second chances, it amplifies reall life, and showcases what the world actually resembles  in representing real experiences, and it also celebrates the beauty of diversity. And for Amirah Vann, being part of this journey is both an honor and a responsibility she fully embraces.
