Alberto Belli to Direct the Latinx ‘Billy Elliot’

Alberto Belli (The House of Flowers) has been tapped to direct Latinx dance movie, The Way You Move, which Tamara Nagahiro of Grandave International is selling in the Cannes virtual market.

The movie follows an inner-city Latino teenager who, after getting in trouble one too many times at school, is forced to serve detention in the ballroom dance club. To his surprise, he discovers that he loves to dance, but he must overcome a family tragedy and the ridicule of his friends before he can bring the rhythms of the street into the ballroom and express his own unique style.

Belli, a commercial and music video director, recently directed multiple episodes of Netflix’s Spanish-language series, The House of Flowers. His debut feature, Gatlopp, produced by Warner Media, is in post-production and he is currently co-creating the drama series Loteria, which is in development with Sony Pictures Television for IMDB TV, with Norman Lear serving as the executive producer.

“Latinx teenagers barely see themselves on screen, and when they do, they are mostly shown as criminals, undocumented workers, or the help. This media portrayal endangers their self-esteem, making them feel they have no escape and ultimately hurts their bright future,” Belli says. “It is time to stop that narrative and create uplifting stories that make the Latinx community dream with examples that inspire! That’s exactly why The Way You Move is essential for our community that desperately needs elevated stories with happy endings.”
