Orgullo Caribeño: Al Harford is the first Dominican to win an NBA title

After 17 seasons in the league, Al Horford, whose full name is Alfred Joel Horford Reynoso, finally reached the pinnacle of basketball success with the Boston Celtics after winning his first NBA title. This victory is significant for both Horford and his home country, the Dominican Republic, as he has become the first Dominican-born player ever to win an NBA title.

The Boston Celtics secured their 18th championship by defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. The series ended in a 4-1 “gentleman’s sweep,” with a decisive 106-88 win in Game 5. This victory allowed the Celtics to break their tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in NBA history —although they had not won a championship in the past 16 years.
For Horford, it was a dream come true after years of hard work and dedication.
Horford received a standing ovation from the home crowd at TD Garden after the game, with the fans recognizing his sacrifices and contributions to the team. Holding the championship trophy, he expressed his joy and gratitude, as he thanked his teammates and family for their support throughout his career. His faith was also evident as he exclaimed, “It’s been long. Gloria a Dios!” (Glory to God!).
President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic celebrated Horford’s achievement on social media, calling it a proud moment for the country. “Al Horford has made history as the first Dominican to win an NBA Finals series. What great pride for our country! Congratulations on your incredible achievement,” he tweeted and included the hashtag #OrgulloDominicano, meaning #DominicanPride.

Before being drafted into the NBA, Horford played college basketball for the Florida Gators. His father, Tito Horford, was also a professional basketball player, paving the way for Al’s career.
In 2016, he joined the Celtics with hopes of winning a championship in Boston. However, his journey was not straightforward. After three seasons with the Celtics, he spent a year with the Philadelphia 76ers and another with the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2021, he returned to Boston, determined to finish what he started. Although the Celtics fell short in the 2022 Finals against the Golden State Warriors, Horford and the team persevered.
During the 2024 Finals, Horford played a crucial role, stepping up after teammate Kristaps Porzingis had to sit out due to an ankle injury. Averaging 7.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, Horford’s performance was instrumental in securing the championship.
Al Horford’s story is one of dedication and resilience. His championship win is not only a personal triumph but also a significant moment for his home country. The celebration of his title marks the culmination of years of hard work and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
