Afro-Latino Culture Fest 2024: A Celebration of Heritage and Community

The Afro Latino Culture Fest in downtown Los Angeles was a celebration of heritage, community, and afro latinidad. Organized by Sharon Cruz, the festival provided a day packed with free, family-friendly activities, delicious food, merchandise, and community vendors. Sharon, who is African American and Puerto Rican, just last year spoke with LatiNation about the importance of the event by sharing her personal journey and highlighting the rich history of Afro-Latinidad in Los Angeles. “When we think of Afro-Latinidad, usually we don’t think of Los Angeles,” she said. Sharon’s words painted a vivid picture of the diverse Afro-Latino migration to LA something she still is seeing a year later, when discussing her vision for the future of the festival she talked about wanting to see it grow “I want it to be a weekend long celebration,” she said speaking on the hopes for the future of the festival.
One of the festival’s highlights was the series of interviews with notable figures such as Aida Rodriguez and Gina Torres.
Gina Torres, known for her powerful presence in Hollywood, spoke passionately about the sisterhood among Latina women in the industry. “Women should always lift each other up, period,” she emphasized. Gina also discussed how the resurgence of her show “Suits” on Netflix has expanded her platform, allowing her to speak more about her Afro-Latinidad. This broader reach has given her the opportunity to advocate for representation and unity within the community.
Aida Rodriguez, a comedian and actress, shared her thoughts on the importance of honoring her Afro-Latinidad. “I speak up to honor my ancestors,” she declared, showcasing the significance of acknowledging and celebrating Afro Latino heritage.
The festival also featured a musical performance by Francia, a fellow Blacktinidad host, who brought the crowd to its feet with his dynamic and soulful music. The performance was a testament to the rich musical traditions of the Afro-Latino community, blending rhythms and sounds that highlights the diverse backgrounds of the attendees.
The array of food vendors at the festival offered an authentic culinary journey through various Afro-Latino cultures. Attendees enjoyed a wide selection of dishes, from savory empanadas, platanos, flavorful ox-tails to refreshing tropical drinks. Each bite was a celebration of the unique and delicious flavors that define Afro-Latino cuisine.
Some vendors showcased handmade crafts, clothing, and jewelry, showing the artistry and creativity of the Afro-Latino community. These unique items provided festival-goers with the opportunity to take home a piece of the culture, further promoting the importance of supporting local artisans and preserving cultural traditions.
Overall, the Afro Latino Culture Fest was a fantastic event that showcased the beauty, strength, and unity of the Afro-Latino community. It was a day filled with music, food, culture, and camaraderie, leaving everyone who attended with a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage and spirit of Afro-Latinidad.
