From Service to Spotlight: Afro-Latina Alma Cooper Wins Miss USA 2024

In an electrifying conclusion to months of Miss USA pageant controversies, Alma Cooper, a 22-year-old Afro-Latina Army officer from Michigan, has been crowned Miss USA 2024. The announcement was made on August 4 during the 73rd Miss USA pageant in Los Angeles, California, Cooper’s victory comes after a tumultuous period for the competition, marked by multiple allegations and controversies that have shaken the pageant community.

But who is Alma Cooper?

Cooper hails from Okemos, Michigan, and is a proud Afro-Latina, and the daughter of a migrant worker. Her journey to the Miss USA crown is as inspiring as it is impressive. Cooper has served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and holds a master’s degree in data science from Stanford University. Throughout the competition, she emphasized the importance of resilience and determination, reflecting on her life experiences and the lessons taught by her mother.

“If there’s anything that my life and my mother have taught me, it’s that your circumstances never define your destiny,” Cooper shared during the pageant. “You can make success accessible through demanding excellence.”

These words show Cooper’s belief in overcoming adversity, a theme that was beloved by the audience and obviously the judges.

Cooper’s win comes in what’s been a controversial year for the Miss USA organization. Earlier in 2023, Savannah Gankiewicz from Hawaii inherited the Miss USA 2023 title after Noelia Voight, the original titleholder, withdrew from her role, urging people to prioritize their mental health. The organization also faced significant changes following allegations of sexual harassment that led to the resignation of Crystle Stewart, the former president, and the departure of her husband, Max Sebrechts.

Even though these controversies have been a distraction for some, Alma Cooper’s win symbolizes a fresh start for the Miss USA pageant. Her success represents a new era for the competition, one where integrity, resilience, and representation take center stage. Cooper’s achievement has been celebrated by many, including celebrities like Magic Johnson, who praised her on social media. “You’ve made all of us Michiganders proud and represented the Afro-Latina community admirably!” Johnson wrote, highlighting the pride Cooper has instilled in her home state and the broader Afro-Latina community.

As Cooper prepares to compete in the Miss Universe competition in November, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of many who see themselves reflected in her journey. She is not just a beauty queen, she’s a trailblazer for Afro-Latina women and a role model for young girls of color across the nation. Cooper’s message is clear: success is possible, no matter the odds, and representation matters.
