As children we grew up on animated media. We fantasized about living in those worlds and going on amazing adventures. We often saw these characters as role models. However, with all the freedom that animation grants there has been a lack LGBTQ representation. In this article, we’ll will highlight some iconic LGBTQ animated characters. Diversity and inclusion in animated characters are of major importance as they reflect the world we live in and inspire a wide range of audiences. 

The Legend of Korra: Korra (bi-sexual) 

The avatar herself, Korra, has been confirmed by the show’s creators to be bisexual. Korra is the courageous and headstrong protagonist of The Legend of Korra. As the Avatar, she possesses the ability to manipulate all four elements and must navigate the challenges of mastering her powers while facing complex relationships, personal growth, and saving the world from various threats. In the early seasons, Korra develops a complicated romantic relationship with Mako, a male character. However, as the series progresses, Korra’s relationship with Asami, a female character and her close friend, becomes increasingly significant. Korra being the main character of the show makes this more impactful. It shows that someone who is a member of the LGBTQ community can be in the spotlight.

Marceline the Vampire Queen is a complex character in Adventure Time. She is a thousand-year-old vampire with major rocker vibes.
