5 Things You Didn’t Know About Breastfeeding

This week is World Breastfeeding week, and I’m glad the world is dedicating a week to this important topic about motherhood we don’t talk that much about, as opposed to just a day.
In honor of these important times, here you are 5 things you didn’t know about breastfeeding:
- Breastfeeding in public is still a taboo in many countries, which is kind of hypocrite because there are billboards with exposed breasts everywhere. However, the law is on the nursing mom’s side. In the U.S., is legal to breastfeed anywhere, Idaho and Utah being the last two states to legalize the law (shocking) in 2018. So, ladies, no one can ask you to cover up or leave a public space when you are breastfeeding, know that.
2. Twenty states and Puerto Rico exempt breastfeeding mothers from jury duty or allow jury service to be postponed. (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah and Virginia). If you needed an extra reason to skip jury duty, breastfeeding, is a good one.
3. Breastfeeding is an important part of going green: Manufacture, transport and disposal of formula, containers, and bottles create pollution and use extra water resources. Besides, it’s free!
4. Breastfeeding decreases the chance of your baby developing any allergies.: Because breast milk contains only natural ingredients and live cultures, it supports baby’s health in many ways.
5. It decreases the risk of osteoporosis in the mom. That’s because women who nurse for a prolonged time have higher osteocalcin levels, which is a hormone that helps build new bone.
So if you are in the fence about breastfeeding or not, I hope these five reasons help you to consider it!
