5 New Netflix Releases in August Where Latinas Take the Lead

Netflix is closing out the summer with a stacked lineup in August, and Latinas’ voices are front and center in some of the most anticipated releases of the month. From long-awaited seasons to gritty dramas and feel-good rom-coms, these are the five titles you can’t miss and the talent behind them.
- My Oxford Year: August 1st
Sofia Carson leads this romantic comedy adapted from Julia Whelan’s bestselling novel. Carson, born to Colombian immigrants, returns to Netflix in a British-American love story that follows Anna, a driven American student arriving at Oxford University with her life perfectly planned. That is, until she falls for a witty local and her carefully laid future takes a wild turn. Directed by Iain Morris (The Inbetweeners), the film blends academic drama with romance and self-discovery. Corey Mylchreest co-stars, known for his roles in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and The Sandman.

- Wednesday (Season 2 – Volume 1): August 6th
Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday Addams in the next chapter of the globally adored gothic series. This season, Nevermore Academy is still dark and twisty, but Wednesday is leaning harder into the horror and skipping the romance. With four new episodes dropping in Volume 1 (Volume 2 arrives September 3), fans can expect sharp humor, family drama, and a new supernatural mystery.
The season logline reads: “Wednesday Addams returns to prowl the Gothic halls of Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await. This season, Wednesday must navigate family, friends, and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem. Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery.”
Showrunners have emphasized the focus on Wednesday’s friendship with Enid, with hints that the season introduces a new Addams family member. Ortega has said the show will get darker and ditch romantic storylines altogether.

Superstar María Becerra makes her acting debut as one of the inmates involved in the underground content network and also contributes to the soundtrack.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and Quico Meirelles, the story adapts Edyr Augusto’s novel and unfolds like a tense, mystical thriller, complete with local folklore and sharp commentary on violence and justice in the Pará region.
The cast includes Domithila Cattete, Marleyda Soto, Lucas Galvino, Ademara, Bruno Goya, Claudio Jaborandy, Luca Dan, Ricardo Teodoro, Sandro Guerra, Welket Bungué, and Wesley Guimarães. It’s a tense, visually rich story that follows Janalice’s fight for survival and the people set on saving her.

- My Life with the Walter Boys (Season 2): August 28th
Nikki Rodriguez is back as Jackie Howard in this teen drama based on the popular Wattpad novel. Season 2 picks up with Jackie returning to Colorado, navigating complicated love triangles and personal growth. With Alex diving into rodeo dreams and Cole reverting to old habits, Jackie has to decide whether she can fit into Silver Falls or stay true to her identity.
Rodriguez, whose father is Mexican, leads the cast once again, alongside Noah LaLonde, Ashby Gentry, and Johnny Link. Season 1 ended with a wedding at the Walter ranch and Jackie flying back to New York, leaving several plotlines hanging. Season 2 continues to explore her connection to the Walter family and her journey toward self-discovery.
Netflix’s official synopsis: “After losing her family in a tragic accident, Jackie has to learn to adapt to a new life in rural Colorado with her guardian — and eight very rowdy boys. As Jackie tries to navigate her new life, the feelings and tensions she tries to deny for the two very different Walter boys threaten to throw everything off course. Will she be able to stay true to herself and still find romance?”
