3 Steps to Follow in Case of an Earthquake

I usually feel like Monday is that day of the week that likes to kick you out of bed, like “Hey, the weekend is over girl, time to get up and hustle.” However, this Easter Monday for all Angelenos – the kick was literal.

A 4.0 earthquake in Inglewood shook the L.A. area early yesterday morning at 4:44am. I’m not into numerology, but I’m definitely superstitious, and I’m sure all these 4’s mean something. No damages have been reported with this one, but when an earthquake hits, you can’t help but wonder: if the big one comes, will I be ready?

Here is a 3 step guide we all should know by heart:

Secure Your Space by identifying hazards. Start today. Try securing at least one item every weekend until you get everything done:

-Move heavy or large items to the floor or low shelves.

-Move things that can fall on you away from where you spend a lot of time.

-Move heavy or unstable objects away from doors and escape routes.

Drop, cover and hold on. During an earthquake, drop to the floor and cover your neck and head with your hands, and get underneath a table and hold on! Running out of the building is not a good idea, experts say, as the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places to be as objects fall. If you can’t get under a desk, move away from windows or other items that can fall on you.

Get a kit together. Pack food, water, medicine and anything else you’d need for at least 72 hours and place them somewhere accessible.
