2024 ESPYS: Serena Williams shades Drake & Harrison Butker

Last night’s ESPY Awards was an evening filled with celebration, surprises, and a bit of drama, all under the charismatic hosting of retired tennis legend Serena Williams. The event, which took place on Thursday night, showcased not only the year’s top sports achievements but also highlighted significant contributions off the field/court.

The show kicked off with a vibrant performance by Ciara, setting the tone for the evening. Shortly after, the ceremonies host Serena Williams took the stage, opening with a monologue that included a nostalgic reference to Jamie Foxx’s song for her during the 2004 ESPYs. Her presence as the host brought a fun charisma needed for a night that lacked big star power other than herself.

One of the more talked-about moments came when Serena Williams, alongside her sister Venus Williams and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, took a light-hearted but pointed jab at Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker who happened to be in attendance. The trio was discussing the importance of supporting women’s sports when Serena pivoted to address Butker directly.

“So go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports,” Venus said, leading to Serena’s interjection.

“Except you, Harrison Butker, we don’t need you,” Serena quipped.

“At all, like ever,” Brunson added.

The Williams sisters made a joke at Harrison Butker’s expense at the 2024 ESPYS.

Venus: “So, go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports.”

Serena: “Except you, Harrison Butker.”

This moment drew attention due to Butker’s controversial speech in May at Benedictine College, where his comments managed to offend both queer people and women. Although the cameras didn’t show Butker’s reaction, the audience buzzed with the remark laughing and cheering.

This wasn’t the only shade Serena threw out, she also called out Drake who’s recent beef with Kendrick Lamar has drawn worldwide viewership,  Serena talked about the song “Not Like Us” by Kendrick which goes after Drake personally, Serena stated “And if I’ve learned anything this year, its that none of us should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar… he will make your hometown not like you, the next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, theyre gonna Forest Gump him, seats taken.”

The ESPYs also honored remarkable achievements off the field & court. The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, received the Pat Tillman Award for Service in recognition of his work founding The Invictus Games. This international event provides a platform for wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women to compete, supporting veterans and active duty individuals.

Dawn Staley, head coach of South Carolina women’s basketball, was awarded the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Staley’s relentless advocacy for cancer research and bone marrow donation has made a significant impact, showcasing the importance of using one’s platform for good.

On the competitive front, Patrick Mahomes clinched the Best Athlete, Men’s Sports award for the second year in a row. Mahomes’ stellar performance, leading the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl victories, made him a deserving winner. His playoff statistics—1,051 passing yards and six touchdowns with only one interception—highlighted his rise as one of the GOATS in the football.

However, the ceremony did have some notable absentees. NBA stars Lebron James, Steph Curry, and reigning MVP Nikola Jokic were not in attendance as they are busy with the Olympic Games. Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, who have made significant contributions to women’s basketball, were also missed. Additionally, the absence of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift was felt, leaving Serena as the main star power of the evening.

Despite the missing stars, Serena Williams did a commendable job hosting the event. Her poise, humor, and occasional sharp commentary kept the audience engaged throughout the night.
