2023 Gold Cup Group Stage Recap and Quarterfinals Preview

The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicked off on June 24th in Chicago, Illinois at the historic Soldier Field. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and Final remain.

The Gold Cup is held every two years and features 16 different countries from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The 2023 tournament is being hosted by Canada and United States across 15 different venues. This marks the 17th Gold Tournament since its creation in 1991. Mexico holds the most titles with eight.

Group Stage 

Group A 

Group A includes 2021 Gold Cup champions and hosts the United States, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and St.Kitts & Nevis. The two squads to make it out of the group stage were the United States and Jamaica with both teams scoring seven points and having an identical record of two wins and one draw. The draw came between the two teams on June 24th with the score being 1-1 after regulation. United States forward Jesús Ferreira leads all players in the tournament with six goals scored. 

Group B

Mexico, Qatar, Honduras, and Haiti make up Group b. The top team out of this group was Mexico with six points. Qatar edged out Honduras to move on as the goal differential rule was applied as both teams ended up with four points and scored three goals each. Honduras had a -3 goal differential and Qatar had a zero point differential. 

Group C

Panama, Costa Rica, Martinique and El Salvador are in Group C. Panama was the top-seeded team to make it out of this group as they had seven points and did not lose a match in the group stage. Second place was Costa Rica with four points. Despite only winning one match, the team was able to move on. Martinique had two of the top four scorers in the tournament with Patrick Burner and Brighton Labeau. 

Group D 

Group D resulted in Guatemala and tournament host Canada moving on. Guatemala lead the group with seven points and Canada was runner-up with five. The bottom two teams were Guadeloupe and Cuba. Guadeloupe lead the group in scoring eight goals while Cuba was not able to get a single point after three matches. 

Quarterfinals 

The final eight continue to play this Saturday, July 8th and on Sunday the July 9th. The Saturday games are Panama vs Qatar at 4 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, followed by Mexico and Costa Rica at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s matches are Guatemala vs Jamaica at 2 p.m. followed by USA vs Canada at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The winners of these matches advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, July 12. The Championship will be played Sunday, July 16th at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
